Freeze Dryer Pump: Oil Changes vs Oil-Free Cost

An oil pump needs fresh oil every so often, and an oil-free pump costs more up front. This page puts a number on both: what oil costs you per batch and per year, and how many batches it takes before the oil you no longer buy has paid for the oil-free upgrade. Change any of the four inputs to match your machine.

Oil-free pump pays for itself after
1,408 batches

That is 29.3 years at 48 batches a year. This is the example until you change the numbers.

Oil per batch
$0.64
Oil per year
$30.68
Oil changes per year
1.9
  • Oil per batch: $15.98 ÷ 25 batches = $0.64
  • Oil per year: $0.64 × 48 batches = $30.68
  • Break-even: $900.00 ÷ $0.64 = 1,408 batches

The prices behind the defaults

Harvest Right's own online shop lists these (harvestright.com, checked October 19, 2026):

ItemPrice
Oil Free Pump$1,695
XL Oil Free Pump$1,995
Industrial Oil Pump (Premier)$795
Industrial Oil Pump (Premier XL)$895
HR Oil$15.98
Oil Filter$39.95

What I don't know: whether a new freeze dryer's price already includes an oil pump, and what the oil-free upgrade adds at checkout. The shop lists the pumps as separate items, so I took the gap between the oil-free pump and the Premier oil pump ($1,695 minus $795 = $900) as the extra cost. For an XL it is $1,995 minus $895 = $1,100. Look at the price in your cart and type the real difference into the form.

How the pump type changes the answer

Harvest Right's FAQ says to change the Premier oil pump's oil every 20 to 30 batches, or sooner if it turns cloudy or dirty. For the Standard oil pump the FAQ says to change and filter the oil every 4 to 5 batches. That difference moves the answer a lot. All rows below use one $15.98 bottle per change, $900 extra for oil-free and 48 batches a year.

Pump and intervalOil per batchOil per yearBreak-even
Premier oil pump, every 20 batches $0.80 $38.35 1,126 batches, 23.5 years
Premier oil pump, every 25 batches $0.64 $30.68 1,408 batches, 29.3 years
Premier oil pump, every 30 batches $0.53 $25.57 1,690 batches, 35.2 years
Standard oil pump, every 4 batches $4.00 $191.76 225 batches, 4.7 years
Standard oil pump, every 5 batches $3.20 $153.41 282 batches, 5.9 years

What this leaves out

  • The filter. Harvest Right says each machine comes with a stand-alone oil filter that cleans the oil so you can reuse it, and sells a replacement for $39.95. The FAQ gives no replacement interval, so the filter is not in the math.
  • Your time. An oil change is still a task that a pump without oil doesn't have. I put no dollar value on it.
  • Pump life, repairs and resale value. I found no Harvest Right figure for any of them.
  • Late changes. Oil changed less often costs less in the table and may cost more in the pump, so follow the interval in your manual.

On the Premier numbers an oil-free pump looks like a convenience purchase more than a way to save money. The oil you would stop buying is the whole saving, which is the $30.68 a year above.

More

Oil is one line in a batch. The running cost page adds electricity and mylar, and the freeze dryer cost calculator puts it all together, with 0 as the oil cost for an oil-free pump.
